Oral-B iO2 Toothbrush review: Sleek, simple and effective (2025)

Oral-B iO2 Toothbrush review: Sleek, simple and effective (1)

I’m certainly no stranger to an Oral-B toothbrush, having tested out their wildly overpriced AI-powered iO10 model a few years ago.

Priced at £892, you won’t find this listed online for more than £450 these days – even then, it’s not an investment worth making, especially considering the price of replacement heads (an eye-watering £72 for a pack of six).

Thankfully, Oral-B might have just righted such wrongs with the launch of the iO2. It’s relatively more reasonably priced at approximately £153.99 (though once again, Oral-B toothbrushes are typically on sale and prices differ between retailers), equipped with all the extras you could possibly need in an electric toothbrush, and the perfect transition tool to take you from manual to dreamy, squeaky clean electric.

ROSERBROTHERS

Designed for simplicity, the electric toothbrush utilises a one-touch system and vibrational timestamps to ensure you get two whole minutes of well-rounded cleaning. According to Oral-B, the iO2’s dentist-inspired round brush removes 100 per cent more bacterial plaque than regular ‘ole manual brushes while remaining gentle on sensitive gums.

It’s set to slowly replace the Oral-B Pro 3 electric toothbrush series as the perfect entry-level toothbrush for manual toothbrush users, and the Pro 3 will be eventually delisted. But what exactly is the difference between the two? And how is the iO2 new given that there are numbers in the series going all the way up to 10?

I’ll get into the nitty gritty, as well as the confusing number system attached to Oral-B’s toothbrushes in my full review below. Keep scrolling to get brushing.

The differences between different Oral-B toothbrushes

Oral-B is home to five different series of electric toothbrushes, with the iO series being their most technologically advanced.

Within the iO series, there are nine different toothbrushes – ranging from the iO2 up to the iO10. Rather confusingly, the iO2 is the latest within the range and is far newer than the older Pro 3, which was part of Oral-B’s Pro series. The Pro series is designed to deliver simple 3D cleaning technology through oscillation, rotation and pulsation, while the iO series combines round head and oscillation-rotation technology with micro-vibrations for the ultimate clean.

The first models to join the iO fleet, originally launched in 2020, were the iO7, 8 and 9. Before the launch of the iO2, the iO3 was considered to be the entry-level brush in the fleet, while the AI-powered iO10 is top of the range.

There isn’t a huge amount of difference between the soon-to-be-discontinued Pro 3 (one of three toothbrushes within the Pro series) aside from slightly more modern brush technology – which is likely why the iO2 is set to replace it. Below, I’ve broken down the specifications.

Key specs for the iO2 (new)

  • iO cleaning technology which is tough on plaque and gentle on gums
  • Three quiet intensity levels including/starting with super sensitive, sensitive and daily clean (vs the daily clean, whitening and sensitive mode of the Pro 3)
  • Automatic gum pressure sensor which slows down brush speed and flashes red when too much pressure is applied (vs Pro 3 360 degree gum pressure control)
  • Two-minute timer which guides you through brush zones (as with the Pro 3)
  • Smart Bristle Technology – bristles fade fully to white when in need of replacing
  • Two brush head variants to suit your needs –
  • iO Gentle Care Brush head with 4,000+ soft, curved, ultra-thin and adaptable bristles which are ideal for sensitive teeth and gums .
  • iO Ultimate Clean Brush Head with thousands of inner and outer bristles angled at 16 degrees, a spiralled bristle pattern and dual-length bristles for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.
  • Long-lasting battery with a low-charge indicator (vs Pro 3’s two weeks on one charge)
  • Comes with a travel case

Design

Sleek, simple and lightweight, there’s not much to write home about when it comes to the design of this electric toothbrush, though I do love the fact that it comes in four chic colourways, unlike many of the other Oral-B toothbrushes on the market. I’ve been using the pink one, but it’s also available in forest green, black and white.

The included travel case is handy and considerably lighter and potentially more fragile than the one that comes with the iO10 – which makes sense, given that the latter has a built-in rechargeable charger. The iO2 charger is smaller and simpler too, which I don’t begrudge in the slightest, though I likely will be using that handy cotton wool pad hack to prevent the base from getting mucky with limescale and toothpaste over time.

Oral-B

The stand-out design feature of this toothbrush lies in its brush heads and the fact that it’s easier than ever to tell when they need replacing. Given that the speed with which the heads wear down is directly related to brushing style and personal needs, my one qualm is that I’ll probably be having to purchase expensive replacements more often than regular folk. I also really enjoyed the fact that it’s one of the quietest wallet-friendly toothbrushes that I’ve ever used.

User-friendliness

One of the key selling points of the iO range is its one-touch technology. Whether you’re switching between modes or pausing brushing momentarily, the toothbrush is powered by one singular button – which makes it incredibly user-friendly.
